What is an elective prenatal ultrasound?
We offer elective 2D, 3D & 4D prenatal ultrasounds to provide a proactive, positive bonding experience for the mother, father and family members with the unborn baby. Realistic surface images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family. A medical, diagnostic ultrasound should have already been performed to assess the gestational age of the fetus and to evaluate for fetal anomalies, as well as the basic components of fetal anatomy.
Does this take the place of an ultrasound at my doctor’s office?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Women seeking an elective prenatal ultrasound with Jelly on my Belly 3D & 4D Ultrasound must already be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a medical, diagnostic ultrasound ordered by their provider to confirm their due date, screen for fetal anomalies, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues. Your imaging session at Jelly on my Belly 3D & 4D Ultrasound is strictly an elective ultrasound. We demonstrate and document only the existence of a heart beat. Please note, at no time is this elective experience to be confused with, or used in place of, a diagnostic ultrasound.
Is it safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?
Extensive studies conducted over 35 years have found that ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies is now normal throughout the United States. These routine scans would be considered highly irresponsible if there were even a small risk to mother or baby. In 3D/4D scanning, exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning. 3D and 4D Ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. The technology is similar to radar. A probe placed on the body emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and generates an image. 4D ultrasound will be similar to a conventional scan in terms of sound exposure.

The story of Jelly on my Belly is a heartfelt journey, rooted in professional expertise and driven by a shared, deeply personal vision. It began in 1997 when Barbara and Tom Costas met at the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at STCC, both graduating in 1999 with their Associate Degrees. This was the start of a partnership that would profoundly impact countless families.
Building a Foundation of Trust
For nearly two decades, Barbara and Tom distinguished themselves in the medical imaging field, building the bedrock of knowledge, skill, and trust that defines their business.
Barbara focused her passion on obstetrics and gynecology, starting in the demanding environment of a high-risk maternal-fetal medicine department at Hartford Hospital. Her transition to a local Ob/Gyn practice cemented her reputation for extensive experience and specialized knowledge, making her a trusted figure in the medical community.
Tom’s career arc led him through varied diagnostic settings, from managing a diagnostic imaging center for a large physician’s practice to partnering with a local surgeon to launch a specialized vascular lab. It was this entrepreneurial experience—merging clinical skill with business acumen—that sparked the realization: the idea of a 3D ultrasound studio could become a groundbreaking business venture.
Launching a Trusted Brand
The desire to transition from the clinical setting to creating an emotional, unforgettable family experience drove Barbara and Tom to dedicate over a year to intensive planning and research. In 2018, their vision became a reality with the launch of Jelly on my Belly in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
Their goal was never simply to open another studio; it was to create a sanctuary, the definitive studio that families implicitly trusted for the special and intimate experience of seeing their baby. This commitment to professionalism, clinical expertise, and genuine care quickly elevated the brand, earning the endorsement of both the local community and, critically, local healthcare providers.
